What is a Catheter and How to use a Catheter?
What is a Catheter?
A Urinary Catheter is a medical device used to treat severe incontinence (the loss of bladder control). While other, non-urological catheters exist for medical diseases and procedures such in cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurovascular. There are many types of Urinary Catheters for different needs of each patient, including Foley, intermittent, coudé, and condom catheters.
How do you use a Urinary Catheter?
Use of a urinary catheter typically involves inserting a latex, polyurethane or silicone tube into a patient's bladder via the urethra. This allows urine to drain from the bladder via the tube, thus allowing the patient to be more in control of their urine flow.
